How to use a proxy with rTorrent

2. Disable features that bypass the proxy

Still in .rtorrent.rc, add: dht = disable peer_exchange = no port_open = no These settings prevent DHT and PEX from exposing your real IP, and stop rTorrent from opening unsolicited ports.

3. Bind rTorrent to proxy IP at OS level

Since rTorrent doesn’t natively support binding to an interface, use OS-level tools like iptables (Linux) to restrict traffic. Only allow outbound connections from the proxy-assigned interface or IP. This guarantees no traffic leaks if the proxy fails.
