1. Getting to grips with Telegram’s security features

Telegram is a cloud-based messaging application that has security and privacy at its core. This does not mean that you should relax and blindly trust everything the developers say about their applications. A solid foundation is laid thanks to Telegram’s MTProto protocol that aims to enhance the security of your communication, there is also end-to-end encryption, whose aim is to have the intended recipient be the only one that can actually decipher the message. However, advanced users add an extra layer of protection to Telegram by utilizing proxy servers.

A Telegram proxy connection will obfuscate your IP address and protect you from attempts to hijack your chats. Your data will be encrypted through a proxy, and your real identity will be hidden from the prying eyes of attackers. An additional benefit of using proxies on Telegram is that it will help you unblock all potential restrictions placed on the app in your country.

2. Why Sokcks5 Proxies, though?

Socks or Socket Secure is a network protocol that directs all traffic through a firewall by routing the traffic to the actual server on behalf of the sender. Socks5 proxies are specifically designed for secure communication. When we say Socks5, we refer to the fact that it’s a layer 5 protocol, which means that it won’t work on layers below it. In layman’s terms, using this layer, an attacker won’t be able to use scanning tools. On the other hand, you will be free to use various request types (HTTP, HTTPS, POP3, SMTP, and FTP), i.e., browse the web normally, chat, email, and share files securely.

Using Socks5 with Telegram, you will anonymize your online activities, which is key if you’re using unknown public Wi-Fi networks, which at times can be susceptible to data breaches. Furthermore, Socks5 offers greater speeds compared to other proxy types, which means you will be able to chat in real-time as intended. Finally, using Socks5, you will be able to bypass any network restrictions and access Telegram, even if it’s restricted in the country of your residence.

3. Getting your hands on Socks5

Getting your hands on the best Socks5 proxies for Telegram should not be too difficult of a chore. A quick Google search will give you more results than you can go through. Make sure to pay attention to a provider’s reliability. Proxy servers need to have record uptime and stability to be considered reliable. Having a server geographically close is another bonus point, but if your entire region is blocked (for example, the Balkans), then disregard the geographical vicinity. In the end, focus on providers that offer strong encryption and data protection measures. This way, your Telegram communication will be covered by the highest level of security.

4. How to set up Socks5 for Telegram

Setting up your Socks5 in Telegram, after you have obtained it, is pretty easy. Once you get all of the details from your chosen provider (this usually includes IP address, port number, and any authentication credentials), open up Telegram.

On your phone, tap the three lines in the left corner of the app, above all of the chats. Once a new context menu is opened, tap on settings.

Click on “Use Custom proxy,” and add all of the details given to you by your chosen provider. If you choose to utilize a SOCKS5 or HTTP proxy (both function similarly), follow these steps:

  • Enter the Hostname or IP address, along with its corresponding Port number.
  • If your network administrator or service provider instructs you to provide login credentials, enter them in the designated fields.
  • Once you have completed the necessary inputs, click on the Save button.

Voila! You should now be connected to Telegram via a Socks5 proxy. Disabling the proxies is also fairly simple, on your mobile device simply turn off the “Use Proxy” option, and on your desktop choose “Disable Proxy” in the last step and you will be proxy-free.

5. Word of caution on free proxies

As you probably already know, public proxies are widely used by a number of users, which puts a strain on the proxy servers. Research conducted by the University of Washington has shown that each public proxy can consume up to 300 MB of data per second. Consequently, open proxies have a short lifespan as operating them requires substantial resources. On average free proxies tend to last for about seven days.

Another major issue with proxies is their tendency to be quickly blacklisted by known websites.

There are two reasons for this:

  1. Websites employ detection services to identify usage. Since public proxies are accessible to everyone it becomes quite easy to spot them. These detection services, such as MaxMind enable websites to uncover the usage of proxies.
  2. Public proxies are heavily used by individuals for accessing websites resulting in these proxies being blocked from accessing the sites.

Due to the blacklisting of proxies by various platforms, they may not provide much use for your needs. Therefore it might be worth considering alternatives. Learn more in Free proxies vs paid proxies (reasons for paying for a proxy).

6. MTProto proxy enters the ring

MTProto, also known as the Mobile Telegram Protocol, is what Telegram is based on, with advanced security features even on low connection speeds. Yet, with the introduction of the MTProto proxy, created by Nikolai Durov, the level of security has been significantly increased, as well as the stability of the app overall on lower connection speeds.

MTProto offers support for two layers of encryption. The initial layer focuses on client-server encryption, which is specifically used in Telegram Cloud chats to ensure communication between clients and servers. The second layer, known as end-to-end encryption, is employed in Telegram Secret Chats as voice and video calls. This advanced encryption method guarantees the privacy and confidentiality of conversations. Moreover, MTProto implements Perfect Forward Secrecy in both chats and secret chats further enhancing the platform’s security measures.

Telegram has provided an explanation for its decision to develop a custom protocol rather than relying on existing ones. One of the reasons behind this choice is to optimize speed and ensure connections, especially when utilizing mobile networks or dealing with large files. By leveraging their protocol, Telegram can deliver performance while maintaining a seamless user experience.

Regarding the usage of end-to-end encryption by default, Telegram has chosen not to enable it for all types of communication. Although end-to-end encryption provides a level of security, there are trade-offs that need to be considered. Enabling it by default for every interaction may lead to decreased speed and limited functionality.

Telegram has managed to strike a balance between prioritizing user privacy and offering a feature-packed messaging platform. In essence, the implementation of MTProto, with its support for layers of encryption and its customized protocol, showcases Telegram’s dedication to safeguarding user privacy while ensuring an effective messaging experience.

7. Socks5 Proxy VS VPN (For Telegram)

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are widely used to ensure the safety of internet connections for browsing, downloading, and other activities. When a computer is connected to the internet, it joins a shared network. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) assign IP addresses to computers and facilitate access to the web. Unfortunately, this setup allows ISPs and potentially government entities with access to their data to monitor activities.

However, VPNs provide a solution by establishing a tunnel between your computer and a private server. While still using your ISP as the connection point, you establish a secure connection with a server. It’s important to note that while there are advantages to using VPNs there are also limitations. Due to the added distance your data travels and the encryption/decryption processes involved, internet speeds can be significantly reduced. Moreover, connecting to VPN servers located far from your location may further impact speed and performance.

Here too Socks5 can be of assistance for users looking to get the benefits of VPNs but remove the speed bumps it encounter. Namely, using Socks5 adds the authorization layer i.e. security layer, but also maintains high speeds as its encryption load is minimal.

When to use VPN and when to use Socks5?

There are clearly benefits and drawbacks when exclusively relying on one solution. Here is a short list of when to use VPN and when to use Socks5 either for Telegram or general usage:

You should use Socks5 if:

  • You need more bandwidth
  • You’re sharing your personal data over P2P
  • You want to hide your IP
  • You need to bypass geographic or content blocks
  • You need improved security (i.e. for Telegram)

You should use a VPN if:

  • You want to browse the web securely
  • You’re sharing your personal data over P2P
  • You’re getting past firewalls
  • You need to bypass geographic or content blocks
  • You need better privacy protection than what Socks5 offers

8. Ensuring privacy and security with Socks5

Socsk5 proxies are well known for their security measures. They have the capability to establish both TCP and UDP connections, providing authentication features. Moreover, top-notch Socks5 providers employ SSH encrypted tunneling for traffic relaying, which adds a layer of protection.

One of the benefits of Socsk5 lies in its ability to effectively bypass firewalls. Not only does it allow users to overcome restrictions imposed by firewalls, but it also ensures a reliable connection. All Socks5 offers exceptional security for a wide range of applications and is compatible with all internet protocols.

While Socks5 will enhance your security when using Telegram, here are some additional suggestions you can implement immediately to ensure that your privacy and security are top-notch:

  • Use a strong password and 2FA on your Telegram account
  • Never click on suspicious links or download a file from an unknown source
  • Turn on automatic updates both on Telegram and on your machine
  • Add a reputable antivirus and anti-malware software
  • Think twice before connecting to a public Wi-Fi

9. Conclusion

Avoiding risks online can be a demanding task. Still, with the right tools and some effort on your part, you can minimize the possibility of being hacked or compromised online drastically. Socks5 proxies are a powerful tool that will raise your privacy and security game to another level if you’re using Telegram for your daily communication.  Speed, reliability, security, and privacy should not be a concern for you if you opt for Socks5; however, you do need to be mindful of where you source your Socks5 from. Reliable providers will give you additional peace of mind, so think twice before opting for a free Socks5 proxy you found online and which has probably been used by thousands of users before you.

There is also an option to combine Socks5 with a VPN for yet another layer of protection online, which is not necessary unless you’re working with highly sensitive data and you’re afraid that you or your team will not follow security best practices online. In the end, the decision to use Socks5 or any other layer of protection online will be solely up to the user and the needs it has. Socks5 is an easy and often inexpensive way of adding peace of mind when spending time online and chatting away with friends or colleagues.
